About Kibong'oto Infectious Diseases Hospital
Kibongo,oto Infectious Disease Hospital has turned 90 years and is yet to have its Centenary Celebration in 2026. The hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in the country, located in Siha district, Kilimanjaro region. It occupies an estimated area of 79 acres of land, of which one third is currently used. It is connected by a 16 kilometer tarmac road to the Moshi – Arusha highway and is about 32 kilometers from Kilimanjaro International airport. It is easily accessible from both Moshi and Arusha, significant cities located in the northern tourist corridor of Tanzania.
The hospital was started in 1926 by Dr. Norman Davies, a British physician, as a sanatorium for patients with tuberculosis. Following the discovery of anti-TB drugs in the early 1940s, Lady Twinning, the wife of Sir Edward Twinning – the last British Governor for Tanganyika – the hospital was officially inaugurated as a TB hospital. It served the whole sub region of East Africa including Somalia. When combination TB therapy was started in the 1950s, Kibong’oto was the sole hospital managing patients with drugs and surgical interventions.
Withholding the Hallmark of Tuberculosis management in the country, the hospital since 1950 has undergone several evolution and devolution leading to change of its scope of its obligation as well as name. It has transformed from being Sanatorium, to TB hospital then to Kibong’oto National Tb Hospital consequently to Kibong’oto Infectious disease hospital in 2010 and yet is heading towards becoming Kibongo’oto Infectious Disease Institute.
The hospital has got a bed capacity of 340 beds catering for both susceptible and MDR-TB along with HIV cum Co-infected patients admitted for DOT plus programmatic management of the diseases as well as care not related to Tb disease. Apart from the in patients, the hospital has got out patients services discharging services to patients /Clients coming for consultation service, drug refills and just for follow up for evaluation of their progress. The outpatient services comprise of laboratory, pharmacy, clinical, nursing, reception, billing, NHIF, X-ray, and Minor theatre services.
Vision of the Hospital: The vision of the hospital was coined in 2013 as spring leading the hospital towards becoming a centre of Excellence for controlling and managing infectious diseases in the Sub Saharan Africa region. The vision is a momentum force for the hospital Strategic Plan of 2013-2018.
Mission of the hospital: To strengthen and build capacity for control of tuberculosis and other infectious diseases in the health system by delivering sustainable, high quality care and prevention through clinical services, research and training.

Strategic Objectives: KIDH has got nine strategic objectives forming the framework for the implementation and achievement of the mission and vision of the hospital. These objectives are:
⦁ To contribute to the national efforts for diagnosis and treatment of TB, TB/HIV, MDRTB, HIV and other infectious diseases.
⦁ To increase community participation in health awareness, care and prevention, especially related to the effects of stigma, gender inequity and culture
⦁ To build the capacity of hospital staff to provide state of the art care and follow up for patients with infectious disease
⦁ To establish Kibong’oto as a Institute for training in infectious disease management
⦁ To establish Kibong’oto as an Infectious Diseases Institute for research
⦁ To establish KNTH as the Kibong’oto Infectious Disease Institute to lead the country in management of infectious diseases and serve as a reference center in the region
⦁ To establish and strengthen the management structures (committees, boards, division and departments) and systems, such as IMS, M&E and QI, supervision
⦁ To improve the infrastructure for care, research and training
⦁ To secure and manage resources for achieving the strategic plan results.
The management of the hospital at the peak is hosted by the Board of trustees as the highest organ of decision making and consists of nine members. The board’s discharge of its duties is augmented by the presence of executive committee, Human resource and Audit Committee. While the board.
On the other hand daily operation of the hospital is overseen by the general director with the help of two directorates thus directorate of Medical services which together ensure that the decisions arrived at trickles down to the departments and translated into products by the users at the technical levels.
